Klein Sun - NewsNitsch Elementary given more than 100 dictionaries
By VALERIE JONESPublished: 09.08.09Members of Northwest Forest Republican Women arrived to Nitsch Elementary School Tuesday morning, wheeling in six crates of books. Each third-grade student at Nitsch will now have their very own dictionary, thanks to the NWFRW. NWFRW started the dictionary project after former President George W. Bush created the No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law in 2002. The NWFRW donated 144 brand-new dictionaries to the students of Nitsch, enough for each of the school’s third-grade students to have one. “Resources are so tight at all of our schools,” said NWFRW president Sue Ann Lurcott. “For these kids to be able to have a personal dictionary that they can take home will be a really big help to all the teachers. The dictionaries will teach the children more than how to spell words. Inside each book, there is a multiplication table, Roman numerals, maps, planets and the Constitution as well as other visuals and learning aids. Nitsch principal Carol James said each of her about 120 third-grade students would be able to take a dictionary home at the end of the school year. “These dictionaries will be very beneficial to our students,” James said. “Sometimes parents don’t have all the resources at home and now teachers might use the dictionaries as a homework tool.” The students at Nitsch wasted no time becoming familiar with the dictionaries. One 3rd grader taught himself how to spell ‘Nitsch’ using the sign language letters in the dictionary. “We greatly appreciate the efforts and generosity of NWFRW to help us meet the needs of our students,” James said. Each child received a dictionary that is theirs to keep and use at home and at school. Nitsch principal Ms. Carol James noted, “We really appreciate the Northwest Forest Republican Women for their generosity and willingness to help our students be more successful at school and at home.” The presentation was made by organization president Ms. Sue Ann Lurcott assisted by members of the board of directors: Ms. Madeleine Forehand, Ms. Bobbie Lupa, Ms. Beverly Johnson, Ms. Sue Mason, and. Ms. Louise Rich,
Ms. Mason noted that this national project of Republican women reflects the mission of caring for America. Ms. Lupa is pleased to be a member of a group that puts dictionaries in the hands of students who need them to encourage their achievement in public school and beyond. As the students explored the pages of their new dictionaries, they were grateful for their very own books. One student looks forward to having his own dictionary so that he will not have to share the family’s dictionary that his sister also uses. Another liked looking at the maps. One of the girls stated that she will use the dictionary when she does not know how to spell a word. Another girl knows that she can use the dictionary to learn things she does not know. A fifth 3rd grader discovered that the dictionary includes lots of information that he does not know. |
